Most local owners feel like they are supposed to be everywhere at once. Facebook, Instagram, and now TikTok, all posting on schedule, all answering comments. In reality you have maybe twenty minutes a week for this, and spreading that thin across two platforms usually means doing both badly.
So start with one. The question is which one, and the honest answer depends less on which app is "better" and more on who your customers are and what your business actually looks like. Facebook and Instagram are owned by the same company, but they reach different people in different ways.
Facebook is broad and older; Instagram is younger and visual
The clearest split is age. Facebook reaches almost everyone: Pew Research found that in the U.S. it is used by about 68% of adults 18–29, 80% of those 30–49, 74% of 50–64, and even 57% of people 65 and older. Instagram concentrates at the younger end — used by 80% of 18–29-year-olds but dropping to 40% of 50–64 and just 19% of those 65+, with about half of all U.S. adults on it.
That does not make Facebook "old." Its single largest age group is 25–34. It just means Facebook covers more of every bracket, while Instagram packs a younger, more style-driven crowd into a smaller, highly engaged space.
The practical read: if your customers are homeowners, parents, and older adults, Facebook reaches more of them in one place. If they are under 35 and care how things look, Instagram puts you in front of a denser slice of exactly those people.
The two platforms want different kinds of posts
This is where effort comes in, and it matters when your time is the scarce resource.
Instagram is built around polished visuals — photos, carousels, Stories, and short vertical videos called Reels. It rewards a clean, consistent look, which means more effort per post. Facebook is more forgiving: it handles text posts, links, events, and longer explanations, and tolerates a plain photo with a helpful caption. Sprout Social's data reflects the split — images tend to perform better on Instagram, while text is better left to Facebook.
One difference trips up a lot of owners: links. Facebook lets you put a clickable link right in a post. Instagram does not — links live in your bio or Stories, so "click here to book" works far better on Facebook. If your goal is to send people to a booking page or your website, that alone can decide it.
